Last Lesson – Time to say goodbye!

Do you know what VAK is?
V- Visual
A- Auditory
K- Kinesthetic
Let’s take the VAK test to check which learning style is your preference.

Different people have their own learning styles, we recommend you to find some memory methods that suit you most.

For Visual Leaner, learning map may be suitable for you. It’s because in the learning map, there are vivid color and pictures that will catch your attention.

For the Auditory Learner, story and homonymic may be suitable for you. It’s because they are related to listening and pronunciation.

For the Kinesthetic Learner, loci may be suitable for you. It’s because the loci method focuses on the route and movement.

Remark:
The learning style may be changed according to your different stages of life so you may change the method accordingly.

Learn-Unlearn-Relearn
In the life long process, you may learn more memory methods. You can also find the new method to replace the old one. Hence, through the process of learning the memory methods, then unlearning these methods and relearning some other methods, it can help you to reconsolidate your memory skills.

This is our last entry for teaching the memory methods, thank you for your participation in our blog. As learning is a life-long process, you will learn more memory methods. Learning Map (Cont'd)

Regarding to icircuit's comment on Learning Map at 2nd April, 2009, we will continue discussing about learning map.

Actually, different people have different learning styles. Therefore, some people may not do well with the learning map. Let's take the below picture as the example, it contained too many words and it was difficult to memorize.

However, these people can improve their own learning map through rewriting and practicing.

After rewriting:

As you can see, the above learning map had more cute pictures, symbols and used mother language. These can help memorizing the 5 important theories of Peter Senge in a easier way.

And the below learning map is about the theory of action.

Remarks: The learning maps that were drawn by other people may not be helpful for you. It is because the processing of drawing the learning map also helps you to reinforce your memory.

So we recommend you to try it on your own! Hope the learning map method can help you learn CC3151 efficiently and effectively. ^^

Method of Loci (Method of Place)

Loci after the Latin word “locus” which means physical location, locality or place.

The purpose of this method is to prepare a short journey consisting of a series of places or stops along the way and then memorize the things along the journey. The method of loci uses the familiar environment to help you memorize the unfamiliar things.

1. You can think of a place or an environment that you are most familiar with. The place can be your workplace, your home, your most favorite restaurant, etc.

The following is the example, a bedroom:

(Pic: http://www.replacementkitchendoors.uk.com/bedroom-doore/bedrooms/bedrooms600/high_gloss_maple_venice_bedroom-main.jpg, last visited on 7/4/2009)

2. Then you can choose ten objects in this place (i.e. the bedroom in this example) and write them down. Just like preparing the route for the journey. In other words, just like the MTR stations, from one station to another station.

3. If you need to memorize some things in a sequence, e.g. like the following exercise that we’ll provide to you, you can use this “Method of Loci” as the aid. Make use of the journey to memorize, and imagine yourself walking through the place.

4. Just like the story method, make your images exaggerated, it will help you to remember it better!

Remarks:
1. If you would like to memorize information for long term or memorize loads of information in a short period of time, you will need to have a multiple journey.
2. The more information you need to remember, the larger the room or the more stops are recommended.

Exercise:
Today, your boss requires you to do the following tasks. Without black and white, can you remember all these tasks?

1. Arrange the box file
2. Print out the name card
3. Attend the seminar
4. Buy postage stamps
5. Send e-mails to boss
6. Data entry
7. Review the project
8. Deposit the checks
9. Answer the income call
10. Reply the complaint

Learning Map

Purpose:
1. Save time
2. Get more things done
3. Save space
4. Find what we are looking for easily

Advantage (Comparing with traditional notes):
1. More structured and logically built up
2. More fun and well organized
3. Can make use of our creative thinking and imagination

Procedure:
1. Write or draw the central word/idea in the middle of a blank piece of paper
2. Start making free associations to that central point. Let branches and twigs grow out of the centre and write one word on each line
3. When getting too many words around the central word, or if associations suddenly come to an end, just open new ‘forks’ after one of the existing words.
**Remember to create as more abundant/diversified as possible.
4. After 5-10minutes, looking at all the words and pick out a few that would like to try on another map. Either put them in the middle of a new map or just go on writing new associations where the word is in the first map.
**Going more and more into detail in the associations.
**Write down every word that pops into mind.
5. Let the map rest for a while. The thinking process and the flow of associations will go on in our brains even if we stop writing and when we come back to the map we will have a lot of new words to add.
6. Let the map stay unstructured until you feel it is maturity.

Rules:
1. Start in the middle of the paper.
It is easier to spread out the lines that way and to read what you have written.
2. One word on each line.
If you need more words, draw new lines. Try to limit the number of words you write. You need only a few words if you choose the right words (keywords).
3. Use different colours.
Use colours to highlight, to decorate, to differentiate one group of words from another and in illustrations.
4. Draw pictures.
Pictures contain a lot more information than words. Try to find pictures that can gather information from a whole group of words.
5. Use symbols, signs and arrows.
Use symbols, signs and arrows to show connections in your learning map or if you want to refer to other reference material you don’t want to have in the learning map. E.g. **, --> , #, +
6. Use your imagination.
Nothing is really forbidden in your own learning map. A learning map is a personal note-taking technique and whatever increases your use of it is permitted.
7. Rewrite the learning map.
Every time you rewrite the learning map you revise the material and you get rid of words you already know, words that are superfluous in one way or another.

Exercise:
“Time Management”

Go back in your thoughts to this important event in your life.

省略法 Acronyms

An Acronym is a word formed from the first or first few letters of several words. For example, HKSAR is an Acronym for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Sometimes, people will make all of the words to be a simple sentence or even a song.

The Story Method

The Story Method is one of the techniques for memorizing many things. Use a story as the link to remember a set of words or sequence of activities. When we were small, we heard a lot of bedtime stories, like Snow White, Three Little Pigs, etc. Up till now, we can still remember the details of the story. Hence, we find it is a good way to memorize things. “Make the story vivid and easy to remember, with silly things happening and with strong sensory content.” The story can be silly and unreasonable. Just like sometimes we can remember almost all of the “broken gags” we have heard but cannot remember the theories we have learnt from the academic subjects.
(Ref: http://changingminds.org/techniques/memory/story.htm, retrieved on 2/3/2009)

The following is the suggestion:

Is the story silly? Yes, it is. But it can help us to remember things more. In addition, if the story is full of exaggeration (誇張), it also helps us to memorize the items better!

Now try to remember the following things (in correct sequence) within 3 minutes:
毛巾 -> 火車 -> 士兵 -> 枕頭 -> 樹葉 ->
花貓 -> 太陽帽 -> 保齡球 -> 河流 -> 旋轉木馬 ->
電腦 -> 蘋果 -> 火柴 -> 森林 -> 草蜢 ->
公主 -> 鉛筆 -> 草裙 -> 雨傘 -> 小鳥

Remark: Don't use a pen/pencil to jot down the words or even draw the pictures.

By using the Story Method, you can memorize more items this time. Hope you enjoy this! Now, it’s time for you to create your own story!
